Malhamah

In brief

Al-Malhamah al-Kubra, the great battle, is a war between the Muslims and the Romans (al-Rum) near the end of time. The hadith describe it as one of the fiercest wars in history.

The Romans land at al-A'maq or Dabiq, two places in northern Syria. An army from Madinah, the best people on earth at that time, goes out to meet them. A third of that army runs away, and Allah never accepts their repentance. A third are killed, and they are the best of martyrs. The last third win, and they are never tested by a trial again. Sahih Muslim describes fighting so long that men pledge to fight to the death three days in a row, and so deadly that a bird flying past the bodies falls dead before it reaches the end of them.

It comes after a truce with the Romans breaks down, and before the conquest of Constantinople and the coming of the Dajjal. Dabiq and A'maq are real places, and in recent years some armed groups used their names to claim the battle had begun. Scholars rejected this, and nothing in the texts ties the battle to any group or state of today.

What to do

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do not wish to meet the enemy; ask Allah for well-being. But if you meet them, be steadfast.'

Where it sits in the sequence

Phase 3 / 7Before the Dajjal

Mu'adh ibn Jabal's narration gives this order: Jerusalem flourishes, Yathrib is in ruins, the great battle, the conquest of Constantinople, then the Dajjal (Sunan Abi Dawud 4294, graded hasan by al-Albani). Sahih Muslim 2897 places the battle at al-A'maq or Dabiq, then Constantinople, then the Dajjal. Sunan Abi Dawud 4292 puts a truce with the Romans before the battle. The narrations on the Mahdi do not state his place in this order.
