Synthesized commentary, isnad grading & cross-references

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #171 in Sunan Ibn Majah.

[Isnad Grading & Assessment]: Scholar verdicts : Al-Albani: Sahih | Muhammad Fouad Abd al-Baqi: Sahih | Shuaib Al Arnaut: Sahih Lighairihi | Zubair Ali Zai: Sahih.

[Core Subject]: The Prophet ﷺ foretold a group who would recite the Quran but it would not go past their throats, and who would leave the religion as an arrow leaves its target. They appeared as the Khawarij.

[Described Characteristics]: Their prayer and fasting would make the Companions' look small, yet they would kill the people of Islam and leave the idol-worshippers alone. Among them would be a man with a deformed arm like a woman's breast.

[Timeline & Context]: They broke away from Ali (RA) after Siffin in 37 AH. Ali fought them at Nahrawan in 38 AH, and the man with the deformed arm was found among the dead, as described.

[Prophetic Practice]: Worship without understanding and mercy can go badly wrong. Be slow to judge other Muslims.
