A man came to us while I was staying, while I was circumcised with a sweat, and he said: Is there anyone staying tonight? So they took him down, and when you looked at him there was a man destined for goodness, as if he were seeking knowledge. He said: Do you have knowledge of Susiya? They said: Yes, he said: Where is it? We said: It is ruined towards the sea. He said: Does it have a spring to which there can be stairs and cold, fresh water? They said: Yes. He said: Is there a ruined fortress next to it? They said: Yes, we said: Who are you, Abdullah? He said: I am a man of the bravest. They said: What is the matter with what you mentioned? He said: The Roman ships would approach the sea until they landed close to that spring, and they would burn their ships. Then the people of Damascus would send to them and they would stay for three days. The Romans would call on them to evacuate the country to them, but they would refuse them, so the immigrants would fight them. The first day would be killing on both groups, the second day would be against the enemy, and the third day Allah would defeat them, and only a few of them would reach their ships. They burned many ships, and they said: We will not leave this country, so he would defeat them. By Allah, the Muslims described that day as the shoes of the ruined tower, and while they were standing there, Allah defeated their enemy until someone came from behind them, telling them that the people of Qinnasrin had arrived and were heading to Damascus, and that the Romans had attacked them, and that there was a rendezvous with them on land and sea, so the Muslim stronghold on that day would be in Damascus.

Synthesized commentary, isnad grading & cross-references

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #1297 in Kitab al-Fitan (Nu'aym ibn Hammad).

[Scholarly Verification Notice]: Recorded in Nu'aym ibn Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan (d. 228 AH). Hadith scholars classify this historical compilation as ungraded and weak overall; its isolated reports are not accepted as established doctrine unless corroborated by standard Sahih works.

[Core Subject]: Al-Rum, the Romans, were the Byzantine Empire in the Prophet's time. Many narrations about the end speak of the Muslims' relations with them: a truce, a joint war, then the great battle.

[Described Characteristics]: Amr ibn al-As heard that the Hour will come when the Romans are the most numerous of people, and he listed their good qualities: they are the most forbearing in trial, the quickest to recover after a disaster, the best to the poor, orphans and the weak, and they resist the oppression of kings.

[Timeline & Context]: Their part runs through the whole time before the Dajjal: first the truce, then the war, then the conquest of Constantinople.

[Prophetic Practice]: Amr's words teach fairness: name the good in others even when speaking of conflict.

[Geographical Locations]: Mentioned in narration : Damascus, Qinnasrin.
