Kitab al-Fitan of Nu'aym ibn Hammad: ungraded, and weak overall. Never established on its own.

The people of Mecca asked the Prophet ﷺ a sign, and the moon split twice in Mecca, so he said: {The Hour has approached and the moon splits, and if they see a sign, they turn away and say, “Continuous magic.” [Al-Qamar: 2] They say: Magic is going away.

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #1680 in Kitab al-Fitan (Nu'aym ibn Hammad).

[Scholarly Verification Notice]: Recorded in Nu'aym ibn Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan (d. 228 AH). Hadith scholars classify this historical compilation as ungraded and weak overall; its isolated reports are not accepted as established doctrine unless corroborated by standard Sahih works.

[Core Subject]: The miracle of the splitting of the moon (Inshiqaq al-Qamar) in Makkah during the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime, which the Qur'an explicitly links to the drawing near of the Hour.

[Described Characteristics]: Surah al-Qamar opens: 'The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split' (54:1). Eye-witness Companions including Ibn Mas'ud, Anas, and Ibn Abbas narrated that the moon split into two distinct halves in Makkah - one part seen above Mount Hira and the other below it - and the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Bear witness!'

[Timeline & Context]: Occurred in Makkah prior to the Hijrah; scholars also note that the cosmic darkening and folding of the sun and moon will occur at the Hour itself.

[Prophetic Practice]: Reflect on Surah al-Qamar (54:1-5) and avoid the heedlessness of those who see clear signs yet turn away.

[Geographical Locations]: Mentioned in narration : Makkah.

[Corroborating & Parallel Hadiths]: Related narrations in the corpus: Jami' at-Tirmidhi (3286).
