حدثنا ابن المبارك، عن سليمان بن المغيرة، عن عبد الله بن مغفل، عن عبد الله بن سلام، أنه قال حين هاج الناس بعثمان: «يا أيها الناس، لا تقتلوا عثمان، فوالذي نفسي بيده ما قتلت أمة قط نبيها فيصلح الله أمرهم حتى يهريقوا دم سبعين ألفا منهم، وما قتلت أمة قط خليفتها فيصلح الله أمرهم حتى يهريقوا دم أربعين ألفا منهم»
O people, do not kill Othman, for by the One in whose hand is my soul, no nation has ever killed its prophet so that Allah would rectify their affairs until they shed the blood of seventy thousand of them, and no nation has ever killed its successor so Allah would rectify their affairs until they shed the blood of forty thousand of them.
