Kitab al-Fitan of Nu'aym ibn Hammad: ungraded, and weak overall. Never established on its own.

The best people in turmoil are black people who graze on the tops of the mountains and in the countryside, and the worst people in it are every rider in a place, and every preacher in a place.

Synthesized commentary, isnad grading & cross-references

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #505 in Kitab al-Fitan (Nu'aym ibn Hammad).

[Scholarly Verification Notice]: Recorded in Nu'aym ibn Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan (d. 228 AH). Hadith scholars classify this historical compilation as ungraded and weak overall; its isolated reports are not accepted as established doctrine unless corroborated by standard Sahih works.

[Core Subject]: A time will come when a believer's safest wealth is a flock of sheep he keeps on the mountain tops, fleeing with his religion from the trials of the towns.

[Described Characteristics]: Abu Sa'id al-Khudri narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There will come a time when the best property of a Muslim will be sheep that he takes to the tops of mountains and the places of rainfall, fleeing with his religion from tribulations' (Sahih al-Bukhari 19, 6495, 7088).

[Timeline & Context]: Describes times of widespread fitnah; it recurs rather than marking a single dated moment.

[Prophetic Practice]: Hold your faith dearer than your standing or wealth; when trials cannot be stilled, withdraw enough to protect your religion without abandoning your duties to others.
