حدثنا ضمام، عن أبي قبيل، قال: سمعت مسلمة بن مخلد الأنصاري، وكان زاد في بعث البحر فكره الجند ذلك، وهو على المنبر، فقال: «يا أهل مصر، ما تنقمون مني، فوالله لقد زدت في عددكم، وكثرت في مددكم، وقويتكم على عدوكم، اعلموا أني خير ممن يأتي بعدي، والآخر فالآخر شر»
O people of Egypt, do not take revenge on me. By Allah, I have increased your number, increased your support, and strengthened you over your enemy. Know that I am better than those who come after me, and the last one is evil.
