Euphrates
In brief
The Euphrates, al-Furat in Arabic, is one of the great rivers of the Middle East. The Prophet ﷺ said that one day it will uncover a mountain of gold, or a treasure of gold in another wording, and people will fight over it.
The fight will be terrible. Of every hundred people who fight over it, ninety-nine will be killed, and each of them will think, 'Perhaps I will be the one who survives.' That is why the Prophet ﷺ gave a clear command: whoever is there at that time should not take anything from it.
The river flows from Turkey through Syria and Iraq, and its flow has dropped sharply in recent decades because of dams, drought and heavy use. Some writers link the shrinking river to this hadith, but the hadith speaks of gold being uncovered and a deadly fight, not simply of the river drying up. Scholars differ on whether the gold is literal or stands for another kind of wealth, such as oil. The hadith do not give it a fixed place in the sequence; scholars count it among the signs before the great ones.
The command is to stay away from it. Greed for wealth is the trial, not the gold.
Where it sits in the sequence
The narrations do not put these in order, and many of them overlap. Sahih al-Bukhari 7121 lists several together.

Abdullah b. Harith b. Naufal reported:I was standing along with Ubayy b. Ka`b and he said: The opinions of the people differ in regard to the achievement of worldly ends. I said: Yes, of course. Thereupon he said: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The Euphrates would soon uncover a mountain of gold and when the people would bear of it they would flock towards it but the people who would possess that (treasure) (would say): If we allow these persons to take out of it they would take away the whole of it. So they would fight and ninety-nine out of one hundred would be killed. Abu Kamil in his narration said: I and Ubayy b. Ka`b stood under the shade of the battlement of Hassan

Revelation 9:13-21
The Sixth Trumpet: The Four Angels Bound at the River Euphrates Released
The sixth angel blows his trumpet, and a voice from the golden altar commands: 'Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!' These four angels, prepared for the specific hour, day, month, and year, are unleashed to slaughter one third of mankind with an apocalyptic cavalry of 200 million horsemen with breastplates of fire, smoke, and sulfur.
Saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, 'Free the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!' So the four angels were released, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, that they might kill one third of mankind.
Revelation 16:12-16; 19:11-21
Drying of the Euphrates, the Battle of Armageddon, and the King of Kings
The sixth angel empties his bowl upon the great river Euphrates, drying up its waters to pave the way for the kings of the East. Demonic spirits gather all world powers to battle at Armageddon (Megiddo in Palestine). Heaven opens, and Christ descends on a white horse, striking the nations with the sword of his mouth and casting the Beast into the lake of fire.
The sixth poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates. Its water was dried up, that the way might be prepared for the kings that come from the sunrise.
They gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew, Armageddon.

'Soon the Euphrates will uncover a treasure (a mountain) of gold; whoever is present should take nothing of it' (Sahih al-Bukhari 7119). Al-Nawawi explains the word as 'laid bare, because its water goes'. The river's water has in fact been falling: dams upstream since 1974 can hold several years of its natural flow, and droughts have hit Iraq hard. After the driest years on record, rain and snowmelt in 2026 refilled Iraq's reservoirs for now. No gold has been found.

Iraq's reserves at an 80-year low (May 2025)
The Water Resources Ministry said Iraq entered the summer with about 10 billion m³ in reserve, half the previous year's, and was receiving less than 40% of its share of the Tigris and Euphrates.

2026: the reservoirs refill, for now
Iraq's Water Resources Minister said stored water rose from about 5 billion m³ in late 2025, the lowest since 1933, to 34 billion m³ by July 2026, with the main dams 70-80% full. In early October Haditha Dam held more than 6 billion m³ and was passing water on to Lake Habbaniyah. A water expert quoted by Channel8 warned the gains 'could be reversed within one dry season'.

Myth check: 'gold has appeared in the Euphrates'
Viral posts show a 'mountain of gold' in a dried river. Fact-checkers found the photo was of an ancient Mittani city exposed by low water in 2022 (on the Tigris, not the Euphrates), and some images were AI-generated. No gold has been found.

- Low water comes from dams, irrigation, pumping and drought together. The narration's sign is the uncovering of gold and the fighting over it; falling water is shown here only because al-Nawawi explains the word that way.
