Sufyani
In brief
The Sufyani is a figure from the descendants of Abu Sufyan. Some reports say he will rise in Sham before the Mahdi, spread oppression, and send an army that the earth swallows up.
It is important to know where these reports come from. There is no narration about the Sufyani in Bukhari, Muslim or any of the six books. The reports come mainly from Nu'aym ibn Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan and al-Hakim's al-Mustadrak, and critics such as al-Dhahabi judged them weak or very weak. Because they are weak, no firm timeline can be built on them, even though they place him before the Mahdi.
What is authentic is a separate hadith in Sahih Muslim about an army that marches against the Ka'bah and is swallowed by the earth, and that hadith does not name its leader. Over the centuries the 'Sufyani' label was pinned on many rulers for political reasons. This site never applies it to any living person or state.
Build your understanding of the end on what is authentic, and leave what is weak to the specialists.
Where it sits in the sequence
The narrations do not put these in order, and many of them overlap. Sahih al-Bukhari 7121 lists several together.

I warn you of seven trials that will occur after me: a trial that will come from Medina, a trial in Mecca, a trial that will come from Yemen, a trial that will come from the Sham (Greater Syria), a trial that will come from the East, a trial from the West, and a trial from the heart of the Sham (Greater Syria), which is the trial of Al-Sufyani. He said: Ibn Masoud said: Some of you will realize the beginning of it, and of this nation there will be some who will realize the last of it. Al-Walid bin Ayyash said: So the trial of Medina was from Talha and Al-Zubayr, and the trial of Mecca was a trial. Ibn al-Zubayr, the strife of Yemen by Najda, the strife of the Sham (Greater Syria) by the Umayyads, and the strife of the East by these people.

Sahih Muslim 2882 tells of an army that will march against one who seeks refuge at the Ka'bah and be swallowed by the earth at al-Bayda'. The name 'Sufyani' for its leader comes only in al-Hakim's Mustadrak and Nu'aym's Kitab al-Fitan, reports that are weak or disputed. This panel gives the readings and warns against the claims that circulate.
Narrations behind this panel: Sahih Muslim 2882a · al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8586 · al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8530
What the commentators said it means
- The swallowed army of Sahih Muslim 2882 is sound; its leader's name and lineage are not established by sahih reports: Ibn Kathir, al-Nihayah, on the Sufyani reports.
Myth checks
Viral 'the Sufyani is here' claims
With each war in Syria, videos name a living leader as the Sufyani, matching weak Kitab al-Fitan details to the news. No scholar cited on this site makes such a claim; the reports they lean on are weak, and naming a living person is not allowed here.
