Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to make supplication during the prayer saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the punishment of the grave; I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of the Antichrist; I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of life and the trial of death; O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from sin and debt." Someone said to him: How often you seek refuge from debt! He replied: When a man is in debt, he talks and tells lies, makes promises and breaks them

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #880 in Sunan Abi Dawud.

[Isnad Grading & Assessment]: Scholar verdicts : Al-Albani: Sahih | Muhammad Muhyi Al-Din Abdul Hamid: Sahih | Shuaib Al Arnaut: Sahih | Zubair Ali Zai: Sahih Bukhari (832) Sahih Muslim (589).

[Core Subject]: The Dajjal (al-Masih al-Dajjal, the false messiah) is a single man who will appear near the end and claim to be God. Every prophet warned his people about him, and the Prophet ﷺ called his trial the greatest from the creation of Adam until the Hour.

[Described Characteristics]: He is a young man, stocky, with thick curly hair, blind in his right eye, which looks like a floating grape. Between his eyes is written ka-fa-ra (kafir), which every believer can read, literate or not. He brings what looks like paradise and hell, but his paradise is fire and his fire is cool water. He orders the sky to rain and it rains. He stays forty days: one like a year, one like a month, one like a week, the rest like ordinary days. He cannot enter Makkah or Madinah.

[Timeline & Context]: In the narrated order he is the first of the great signs. He comes after the great battle with the Romans and the conquest of Constantinople, and Isa (AS) kills him at the gate of Lud.

[Prophetic Practice]: Memorise the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf, read al-Kahf on Fridays, and in every prayer before the salam ask Allah's refuge from the trial of the Dajjal. Whoever hears of him should keep away from him.

[Core Subject]: Death is the first stage of the hereafter. Between death and resurrection every soul is in al-barzakh, 'the barrier', and the grave is either a garden of Paradise or a pit of the Fire.

[Described Characteristics]: In the grave two angels ask three questions: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man who was sent among you? The believer answers and his grave is widened and lit, and he is shown his place in Paradise. The one who doubted says 'I don't know, I heard people saying something so I said it', and is punished.

[Timeline & Context]: It begins for each person at their own death and lasts until the Trumpet.

[Prophetic Practice]: Seek refuge from the punishment of the grave in every prayer, and remember death often: 'the destroyer of pleasures'.
