Death and the grave (barzakh)
In brief
Death is the first stage of the hereafter. Between death and the resurrection every soul is in al-barzakh, 'the barrier'. The Quran says that behind the dead 'is a barrier until the Day they are raised'. For each person it begins at their own death and lasts until the Trumpet.
In the grave two angels ask three questions: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man who was sent among you? The believer answers, his grave is made wide and full of light, and he is shown his place in Paradise. The one who doubted says, 'I don't know. I heard people saying something, so I said it too', and is punished. The grave is either a garden of Paradise or a pit of the Fire.
The long hadith of al-Bara' ibn Azib describes the soul's journey after death in detail.
Seek refuge from the punishment of the grave in every prayer, and remember death often: 'the destroyer of pleasures'.

Verses of the Quran
93. And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or says, "It has been inspired to me," while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, "I will reveal [something] like what Allah revealed." And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant

The Chinvat Bridge (Bridge of the Separator), the Scales of Rashnu, and the Soul's Crossing
Zoroastrian eschatology details the journey of the soul after death to the Chinvat Bridge spanning the chasm between this world and paradise. The righteous judge Rashnu weighs the soul's deeds on a golden scale that tips not by a hair's breadth. For the righteous, the bridge widens to the breadth of nine javelins, guided by a radiant maiden (the embodiment of their good deeds) into the House of Song (Garothman). For the wicked, the bridge sharpens like a razor's edge, and their own foul deeds plunge them into the abyss of darkness.
