It was narrated that Hudhaifah bin Asid said:"The Prophet (ﷺ) looked out at us from a room, when we were talking about the Hour. He said: 'The Hour will not begin until there are ten signs: Dajjal, (False Christ), the smoke, and the rising of the sun from the west

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #4041 in Sunan Ibn Majah.

[Isnad Grading & Assessment]: Scholar verdicts : Al-Albani: Sahih | Muhammad Fouad Abd al-Baqi: Sahih | Shuaib Al Arnaut: Hasan Sahih | Zubair Ali Zai: Sahih Muslim.

[Core Subject]: The Hour (al-Sa'ah) is the moment this world ends. Everything alive dies, the universe is undone, and then comes the resurrection. The Quran mentions it again and again, and the Prophet ﷺ spoke of the signs that come before it.

[Described Characteristics]: It comes suddenly, while people are busy with their lives: one man is selling cloth, another is fixing his water trough, another is lifting food to his mouth, and none of them finishes. Before it come signs, small ones that spread slowly and ten great ones that come close together.

[Timeline & Context]: Only Allah knows. The Quran says its knowledge is with Him alone, and when Jibril asked the Prophet ﷺ, he answered: the one asked knows no more than the one asking. Any date or countdown contradicts this.

[Prophetic Practice]: A man asked, 'When is the Hour?' The Prophet ﷺ asked back, 'What have you prepared for it?' The real question is our own preparation, not the date.

[Core Subject]: The Dajjal (al-Masih al-Dajjal, the false messiah) is a single man who will appear near the end and claim to be God. Every prophet warned his people about him, and the Prophet ﷺ called his trial the greatest from the creation of Adam until the Hour.

[Described Characteristics]: He is a young man, stocky, with thick curly hair, blind in his right eye, which looks like a floating grape. Between his eyes is written ka-fa-ra (kafir), which every believer can read, literate or not. He brings what looks like paradise and hell, but his paradise is fire and his fire is cool water. He orders the sky to rain and it rains. He stays forty days: one like a year, one like a month, one like a week, the rest like ordinary days. He cannot enter Makkah or Madinah.

[Timeline & Context]: In the narrated order he is the first of the great signs. He comes after the great battle with the Romans and the conquest of Constantinople, and Isa (AS) kills him at the gate of Lud.

[Prophetic Practice]: Memorise the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf, read al-Kahf on Fridays, and in every prayer before the salam ask Allah's refuge from the trial of the Dajjal. Whoever hears of him should keep away from him.

[Core Subject]: The Smoke (al-Dukhan) is one of the ten great signs: a smoke that covers people, mentioned in Surah al-Dukhan.

[Described Characteristics]: The Quran calls it 'a visible smoke that will envelop the people: this is a painful punishment'. Scholars who hold it is still to come say it will affect the believer like a cold and the disbeliever far more severely.

[Timeline & Context]: It is one of the ten great signs, which the Prophet ﷺ listed without giving them a fixed order.

[Prophetic Practice]: The Prophet ﷺ told us to hasten to good deeds before six things, the smoke among them.

[Core Subject]: One morning the sun will rise from the west. When people see it, everyone will believe, but faith that was not there before will no longer help, and the door of repentance closes.

[Described Characteristics]: The Quran says: 'On the day some of your Lord's signs come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before.' The Prophet ﷺ explained that this is the rising of the sun from its place of setting.

[Timeline & Context]: The first of the last signs to appear is either the sun rising from the west or the Beast coming out in the forenoon; whichever comes first, the other follows soon after.

[Prophetic Practice]: Allah stretches out His hand by night for the one who sinned by day, and by day for the one who sinned by night, until the sun rises from the west. Repent today.
