Kitab al-Fitan of Nu'aym ibn Hammad: ungraded, and weak overall. Never established on its own.

Oh Allah, help them with years like the years of Joseph, so a year took them in which they ate bones and dead things, until one of them began to see what was between him and the sky like the appearance of smoke due to hunger, and they said: Our Lord, remove the torment from us. We are believers. So it was said to him: If We remove them, they will return. He said: So he removed them, and they returned, so Allah took revenge on them on the Day of Badr. That is the Almighty’s saying: {So watch for the day when the sky will bring forth clear smoke covering the people. This is a painful punishment.} [Al-Dukhan: 11] To his saying: {Indeed, you will return} [Al-Dukhan: 15]

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #1675 in Kitab al-Fitan (Nu'aym ibn Hammad).

[Scholarly Verification Notice]: Recorded in Nu'aym ibn Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan (d. 228 AH). Hadith scholars classify this historical compilation as ungraded and weak overall; its isolated reports are not accepted as established doctrine unless corroborated by standard Sahih works.

[Core Subject]: The Smoke (al-Dukhan) is one of the ten great signs: a smoke that covers people, mentioned in Surah al-Dukhan.

[Described Characteristics]: The Quran calls it 'a visible smoke that will envelop the people: this is a painful punishment'. Scholars who hold it is still to come say it will affect the believer like a cold and the disbeliever far more severely.

[Timeline & Context]: It is one of the ten great signs, which the Prophet ﷺ listed without giving them a fixed order.

[Prophetic Practice]: The Prophet ﷺ told us to hasten to good deeds before six things, the smoke among them.

[Core Subject]: Yawm al-Qiyamah, the Day of Resurrection, is the Day when all people stand before Allah to be judged. It has many names in the Quran: the Day of Recompense, the Day of Reckoning, the Overwhelming, the Inevitable.

[Described Characteristics]: A nursing mother forgets her baby, a pregnant woman miscarries, and people look drunk though they are not. A person flees from his brother, mother, father, wife and children; each has enough worry of his own. Allah speaks to each person directly with no interpreter between them.

[Timeline & Context]: It begins with the second blow of the Trumpet and moves through its stages: resurrection, gathering, intercession, reckoning and the scales, the Pool and the Bridge, and then Paradise or Hell.

[Prophetic Practice]: 'A person's feet will not move on that Day until he is asked about four things: his life and how he spent it, his knowledge and what he did with it, his wealth, where he earned it and how he spent it, and his body and how he used it.'
