The Day of Judgment

In brief

Yawm al-Qiyamah, the Day of Resurrection, is the Day when every human being stands before Allah to be judged. The Quran gives it many names: the Day of Recompense, the Day of Reckoning, the Overwhelming, the Inevitable. Belief in the Last Day is one of the six pillars of faith, and the Quran comes back to it on almost every page, because it gives meaning to every deed.

Its terror is described in plain human terms. A nursing mother forgets her baby, a pregnant woman loses her child, and people look drunk though they are not. A person runs from his brother, mother, father, wife and children, because each has enough worry of his own. Allah speaks to each person directly, with no interpreter between them.

It begins with the second blow of the Trumpet and moves through stages: resurrection, the gathering, intercession, the reckoning and the scales, the Pool and the Bridge, and then Paradise or Hell. Each stage has its own page on this site.

What to do

'A person's feet will not move on that Day until he is asked about four things: his life and how he spent it, his knowledge and what he did with it, his wealth, where he earned it and how he spent it, and his body and how he used it.'
