حدثنا ابن فضيل، عن السري بن إسماعيل، عن الشعبي، عن سفيان بن الليل، قال: أتيت حسن بن علي رضي الله عنهما بعد رجوعه من الكوفة إلى المدينة فقلت له: يا مذل المؤمنين، فكان مما احتج علي أن قال: سمعت عليا رضي الله عنه يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «لا تذهب الليالي والأيام حتى يجتمع أمر هذه الأمة على رجل واسع السرم، ضخم البلعم، يأكل ولا يشبع» وهو معاوية، فعلمت أن أمر الله تعالى واقع، وخفت أن تجري بيني وبينه الدماء، والله ما يسرني بعد إذ سمعت هذا الحديث أن لي الدنيا وما طلعت عليه الشمس والقمر، وأني لقيت الله تعالى بمحجمة دم امرئ مسلم ظلما
The nights and days would not pass until the affairs of this nation were gathered around a man with a large stature and a large mouth, who ate without being satisfied, and he was Muawiyah. So I knew that the command of Allah Almighty would be fulfilled, and I feared that blood would flow between me and him. By Allah, I was not pleased after I heard this hadith that I had this world and what the sun and moon had risen upon, and that I met Allah Almighty by unjustly cupping the blood of a Muslim man.
