The Beast (Dabbah)
In brief
The Beast, Dabbat al-Ard in Arabic, is a creature that Allah will bring out of the earth near the end of time. It will speak to people and mark them as believers or disbelievers.
The Quran says: 'We will bring out for them a beast from the earth that will speak to them, because people had no certain faith in Our signs.' Narrations in al-Tirmidhi and Musnad Ahmad add that it marks people's faces, so that in the marketplace everyone knows who is a believer and who is not. Scholars differ on how strong these extra details are.
Its shape and the place it comes out are described only in weak narrations, which scholars such as Ibn Kathir report with caution. What is firm is what the Quran and sahih hadith say: it will come, it will speak, and it is a great sign. It comes close to the sun rising from the west; whichever of the two comes first, the other follows soon after.
This is one of the six before which the Prophet ﷺ urged us to hasten to good deeds.
Where it sits in the sequence
The sun rising from the west and the Beast come close together, whichever is first (Sahih Muslim 2941). One version of Sahih Muslim 2901 ends its list with a fire that drives people to their gathering. The narrations here do not fix the places of the Smoke or the destruction of the Ka'bah.
Verses of the Quran
82. And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith]

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed:When three things appear faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from his faith: the rising of the sun in its place of setting, the Dajjal, and the beast of the earth

Hudhaifa b. Usaid al-Ghifari reported:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to us all of a sudden as we were (busy in a discussion). He said: What do you discuss about? They (the Companions) said. We are discussing about the Last Hour. Thereupon he said: It will not come until you see ten signs before and (in this connection) he made a mention of the smoke, Dajjal, the beast, the rising of the sun from the west, the descent of Jesus son of Mary (Allah be pleased with him), the Gog and Magog, and land-slides in three places, one in the east, one in the west and one in Arabia at the end of which fire would burn forth from the Yemen, and would drive people to the place of their assembly

Hudhaifa b. Usaid reported:Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) was in an apartment and we were beneath that, that he peeped in and said to us: What are you discussing about? We said: (We are discussing about the Last) Hour. Thereupon he said: The Last Hour would not come until the ten signs appear: land-sliding in the east, and land-sliding in the west, and land-sliding in the peninsula of Arabia, the smoke, the Dajjal, the beast of the earth, Gog and Magog, the rising of the sun from the west and the fire which would emit from the lower part of 'Adan. Shu'ba said that 'Abd al-'Aziz b. Rufai' reported on the authority of Abu Tufail who reported on the authority of Abu Sariha a hadith like this that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) did not make a mention of (the tenth sign) but he said that out of the ten one was the descent of Jesus, son of Mary (peace be upon him), and in another version it is the blowing of the violent gale which would drive the people to the ocean

Abdullah b. `Amr reported:I committed to memory a hadith from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and I did not forget it after I had heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The first sign (out of the signs of the appearance of the Dajjal) would be the appearance of the sun from the west, the appearance of the beast before the people in the forenoon and which of the two happens first, the second one would follow immediately after that
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:Hasten in performing these good deeds (before these) six things (happen): (the appearance) of the Dajjal, the smoke, the beast of the earth, the rising of the sun from the west, the general turmoil (leading to large-scale massacre) and death of masses and individuals
Abu zur’ah said:A group of people came to Marwan in Medina, and they heard him say that the first of the signs to appear would be the coming forth of the Dajjal (Antichirst). He said: I then went to Abd Allah b. ‘Amr and mentioned it to him. He did not say anything(reliable). I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The first of the signs to appear will be the rising of the sun in its place of setting and the coming forth of the beast against mankind in the forenoon. Whichever of them comes first will soon be followed by the other. ’Abd Allah who used to read the scriptures (Torah, Gospel) said: I think the first of them will be the rising of the sun in its place of setting

Revelation 13:1-18
The Beast from the Sea, the Beast from the Earth, and the Number 666
A blasphemous seven-headed beast arises out of the sea, given global dominion by the dragon (Satan) for forty-two months to persecute the saints. A second beast rises from the earth, performing deceptive wonders (even making fire fall from heaven) and coercing all humanity to take a mark on their right hand or forehead (666) to buy or sell.
There was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemy, and he was given authority to make war for forty-two months.
Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six.

The Unbinding of Azhi Dahaka (Zahhak): The Apocalyptic Beast Unleashed
The three-headed fiend and tyrant Azhi Dahaka (Zahhak), who had been bound in heavy chains within the depths of Mount Damavand by hero Fredon, breaks his bonds at the climax of the world's distress. Surging forth with demonic fury, he swallows a third of mankind, cattle, and sheep, scorching the land until the ancient hero Keresaspa is awakened from slumber by angels to slay him with his club.
Azh-i Dahak az band be raced... u se-yak az mardoman u charpayan be oparad...
Azhi Dahaka will rush from his bonds... and will swallow one-third of mankind and cattle...

Meaning and context
'When the word is fulfilled against them, We will bring out for them a beast from the earth that will speak to them' (Quran 27:82). It comes on the same morning as the sun rising from the west, or close to it (Sahih Muslim 2941). It lies ahead; this panel gives the readings.
Narrations behind this panel: Sahih Muslim 2941a · Sahih Muslim 2901a · Sahih Muslim 2947a
What the commentators said it means
- It marks believer and unbeliever so that people are known by it: reported from Abu Hurayrah, Musnad Ahmad and Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3187, and explained by Ibn Kathir.
- Its shape and the place it emerges are described only in weak reports; the Quran and sahih narrations do not detail them: al-Qurtubi.
Read with care
- Viral images of 'the Beast found' are hoaxes or ordinary animals; nothing here is matched to the sign (rule 1).
