Ya'juj and Ma'juj

In brief

Ya'juj and Ma'juj, known in English as Gog and Magog, are two huge peoples descended from Adam. The Quran tells how Dhul-Qarnayn built a barrier of iron and copper to hold them back. Near the end of time that barrier gives way and they pour out across the earth.

They come rushing down from every height. The first of them drink Lake Tiberias dry, and when the last of them pass by they say, 'There was water here once.' No one can fight them, so Allah tells Isa (AS) to take the believers up Mount Tur. Isa and his companions pray, and Allah sends worms into the necks of Ya'juj and Ma'juj, and they all die in a single night. Birds carry the bodies away, and a rain washes the earth clean.

They come out after the Dajjal is killed, in the time of Isa (AS), and this is one of the ten great signs. Once the Prophet ﷺ woke up red in the face and said that an opening the size of a ring had been made in their barrier. Scholars differ on where the barrier is, and naming any nation of today as Ya'juj and Ma'juj is guesswork.

What to do

When Zaynab asked, 'Will we be destroyed while there are righteous among us?', he said, 'Yes, if filth increases.' Guarding against open evil is our part.

Phase 4 / 7The Dajjal, Isa (AS), Ya'juj and Ma'juj

Al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an's narration gives this order: the Dajjal, the descent of Isa (AS) east of Damascus, the Dajjal killed at the gate of Lud, Ya'juj and Ma'juj, then a gentle wind that takes the believers' souls (Sahih Muslim 2937).
