The Olivet Discourse: Signs of the End of the Age and the Temple's Destruction

Summary

Sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Jesus is asked by his disciples: 'What will be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?' He details the birth pangs of the end: false messiahs, wars and rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. He warns of severe persecution, love growing cold, and the gospel being preached in all the world. He points to Daniel's 'abomination of desolation' standing in the holy place, followed by unprecedented tribulation, celestial collapse, and the Son of Man descending with power and great glory on the clouds of heaven with a great trumpet sound.

Original text and meaning

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren't troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places.

When, therefore, you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand)...

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven... and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Close parallels in Islam

The Olivet Discourse shares striking parallels with authentic hadiths regarding the Signs of the Hour: the appearance of nearly thirty false claimants to prophethood (Dajjals) before the Hour (Sahih al-Bukhari 7121), the increase in widespread earthquakes (Zalazil) and bloodshed (Harj) (Bukhari 1036), the decline of trust and sincerity, and the physical descent of 'Isa ibn Maryam with two angels from heaven (Sahih Muslim 2937).

Background

Spoken on the Mount of Olives facing the Temple Mount around 30-33 AD. Within one generation (70 AD), the Roman legions under Titus destroyed the Second Temple. Christian dispensationalists believe the passage also points to a future Third Temple where the Antichrist will commit the final abomination.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-122 Thessalonians

The Man of Lawlessness (Anti-Christ) Seated in the Temple of God

Summary

Paul insists to the Thessalonians that the Day of the Lord cannot occur until the great apostasy takes place and the 'Man of Lawlessness' (Son of Destruction) is unveiled. This arch-deceiver opposes and exalts himself above every god or object of worship, going so far as to take his seat in the Temple of God, proclaiming that he himself is God. He performs counterfeit miracles and deceptive signs under Satan's power, until the Lord Jesus slays him with the breath of his mouth and annihilates him by the splendor of his coming.

Original text and meaning

Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God.

Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will kill with the breath of his mouth, and destroy by the manifestation of his coming.

Close parallels in Islam

This is the most precise New Testament description of Al-Masih ad-Dajjal (the False Messiah / Antichrist). Authentic hadiths explicitly confirm that Dajjal will proclaim divinity ('I am your lord'), display deceptive satanic miracles, and gather followers around Bayt al-Maqdis. When Prophet 'Isa confronts him at the Gate of Ludd (Lod), the hadith states: 'When the enemy of Allah (Dajjal) sees him, he will dissolve just as salt dissolves in water... and 'Isa will strike him with his spear' (Sahih Muslim 2897). The 'breath of his mouth' slays unbelievers as far as his eye can reach (Muslim 2937).

Background

This chapter is the primary Christian scriptural basis for the belief that a physical 'Third Temple' must be constructed in Jerusalem before the End Times, because the Man of Lawlessness must 'take his seat in the temple of God.' Modern Christian Zionists and dispensationalists closely track efforts to rebuild the Temple on Mount Moriah for this reason.

Revelation 16:12-16; 19:11-21Revelation

Drying of the Euphrates, the Battle of Armageddon, and the King of Kings

Summary

The sixth angel empties his bowl upon the great river Euphrates, drying up its waters to pave the way for the kings of the East. Demonic spirits gather all world powers to battle at Armageddon (Megiddo in Palestine). Heaven opens, and Christ descends on a white horse, striking the nations with the sword of his mouth and casting the Beast into the lake of fire.

Original text and meaning

The sixth poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates. Its water was dried up, that the way might be prepared for the kings that come from the sunrise.

They gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew, Armageddon.

Close parallels in Islam

Both traditions converge on the drying of the Euphrates as a sign of global crisis, and on the plains of historical Sham/Palestine as the staging ground for the final cataclysmic battle (Al-Malhamah al-Kubra) where the False Messiah is vanquished.

Background

Armageddon derives from Hebrew 'Har Megiddo' (Mount Megiddo), the ancient fortress guarding the Jezreel Valley.
