Is Imam Mahdi with the Houthis?

Examining the prophetic praise of Yemen as the homeland of faith, the peaceful entry of Islam, Umar's legacy at Al-Aqsa, and a refutation of apocalyptic defeatism.

1. The Nationality of Iman: Yemen Embraced Islam Without War

When discussing Yemen in the light of the Qur'an and authentic Hadith, we encounter a statement of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of unparalleled weight: 'Al-Imanu Yaman, wal-Hikmatu Yamaniyyah' - 'Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3499, Sahih Muslim 52).

As scholars highlight, when we define our personal identity, we cite our nationality: 'I am Bangladeshi', or 'I am Arab'. Yet the Prophet ﷺ declared that the very nationality, origin, and living embodiment of Iman is Yemeni! Furthermore, Hikmah - the supreme wisdom that Allah bestowed upon all the noble Prophets throughout history - was declared by the Prophet ﷺ to be fundamentally Yemeni.

Moreover, the Prophet ﷺ supplicated specifically for two regions: 'O Allah, bless our Sham and bless our Yemen' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1037). When companions asked him to pray for other regions, he deliberately returned his supplication to Sham and Yemen, honoring these two lands.

Historically, Yemen holds an extraordinary distinction unmatched by any other land: It is the only entire country that Muhammad ﷺ and his noble companions did not have to fight a war to conquer. In the 10th year of the Hijrah, when Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) was sent to Yemen with the Prophet's invitation, the massive tribe of Hamdan accepted Islam in a single day through peaceful Da'wah alone. Not an arrow was loosed, nor a sword drawn. Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ fell in prostration of gratitude (Sujud al-Shukr) and declared: 'Peace be upon Hamdan! Peace be upon Hamdan!'

Just as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei embraced Islam through character and trade without military conquest, Yemen entered Islam through pure conviction. Therefore, the innocent people of Yemen are sacred. To massacre them, starve them, or turn their cities into proxy battlegrounds is a severe transgression. But this divine praise belongs to the gentle, faithful populace who love the Sunnah - not to an armed sectarian militia that seized power by force and brought devastation upon Yemen.

2. The Three Holy Sanctuaries and the Camel of Umar (RA)

In Islamic jurisprudence, spiritual sanctities are absolute. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that journeying with the intention of seeking special worship reward is strictly limited to three mosques: Al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, and Al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem (Sahih al-Bukhari 1189). Any belief attributing pilgrimage sanctity to other shrines or graves is baseless.

Al-Aqsa is situated in the land of Sham, which Allah encircled with blessings (alladhi barakna hawlahu). Sham is the land of migration of Ibrahim (AS) and the prophesied fortress of the believers before the Day of Judgment.

Who originally conquered Al-Masjid al-Aqsa for Islam? It was the second Rightly Guided Caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), in 16 AH (637 CE). His entry into Jerusalem remains one of the most stunning moments in human history: Umar and his servant shared a single camel, alternating turns to ride. When they reached Jerusalem, it was the servant's turn to ride, so Amir al-Mu'minin entered leading the camel on foot through dust and mud. Patriarch Sophronius recognized him instantly from early Christian scriptural descriptions as the ascetic ruler destined to receive the keys. Umar entered without bloodshed, granted protection to all residents under the Covenant of Umar, and personally cleaned the litter from the sacred prayer grounds.

Centuries later, when the Crusaders massacred tens of thousands inside Al-Aqsa, it was liberated in 1187 CE by Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayyubi, a devoted leader of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah who revered the Sahaba and united Muslims on orthodox Tawhid.

The Theological Maxim: Umar ibn al-Khattab conquered Al-Aqsa, and Salahuddin liberated it upon Umar's path. Therefore, be absolutely certain: Anyone who hates, curses, or disowns Umar ibn al-Khattab can NEVER conquer or liberate Al-Aqsa. The Houthi movement's foundational doctrines curse Umar and the Sahaba; an ideology that reviles the conqueror of Al-Aqsa cannot spiritually inherit his victory.

3. The Hidden Child in the Cave vs. The Prophetic Mahdi

The ideological connection between the Houthis and the Mahdi stems from Shia eschatological doctrine, heavily influenced by Iranian geopolitical theology. In Twelver dogma, the Mahdi is Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Askari, who allegedly entered an underground cellar (Sardab) in Samarra, Iraq, in 260 AH at the age of five and has been alive in occultation for more than 1,150 years.

Classical Islamic scholarship (including Ibn Kathir in Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah and Ibn Taymiyyah in Minhaj as-Sunnah) systematically debunked this: Hasan al-Askari died without leaving any documented son, and the concept of an immortal child hiding in a cave for eleven centuries contradicts revelation, biology, and intellect.

In stark contrast, authentic Prophetic Hadith presents the real Mahdi:

  1. Name and Father: 'His name will match my name, and his father's name will match my father's name' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4282). He is Muhammad ibn Abdullah, not Muhammad ibn al-Hasan.
  2. Lineage: Descended from Fatimah (RA) through Hasan ibn Ali (RA) (Sunan Abi Dawud 4284).
  3. Prepared in a Single Night: 'Al-Mahdi is from us, the Ahl al-Bayt; Allah will rectify him in a single night' (Sunan Ibn Majah 4085). He is a mortal man living in his own generation, suddenly reformed and prepared by Allah for leadership.
  4. Emergence at the Ka'bah: The Mahdi does not appear from a cave commanding a guerrilla army. He actively flees leadership until pious believers corner him in Makkah, compelling him to take the pledge of allegiance between the Corner (Rukn) and the Station of Ibrahim (Maqam) (Sunan Abi Dawud 4286).

To label an armed mountain militia firing missiles as the army of the Mahdi is a total inversion of authentic Islamic eschatology.

4. The Heritage of Abraha: Ballistic Missiles Over Makkah

The ultimate test of any Islamic movement is its reverence for the Sacred House of Allah (Al-Ka'bah) and the Holy Sanctuaries.

In 570 CE ('Am al-Fil), Abraha al-Ashram, the viceroy of Yemen, marched an army with massive war elephants toward Makkah to destroy the Ka'bah. Allah annihilated Abraha's army through flocks of birds (Tayran Ababil) carrying stones of sijjil, reducing them to devoured straw (Surah Al-Fil 105:1-5). Allah established an eternal divine precedent: Anyone marching out of Yemen with aggression toward the Sacred House of Allah invites immediate divine wrath.

Tragically, in October 2016 and July 2017, the Houthi movement launched long-range ballistic missiles (such as Burkan-1 and Burkan-2) toward the Makkah province, intercepted by air defense systems in the skies of Taif within dozens of kilometers of the Holy Mosque. These missile launches outraged the entire Muslim world and were condemned by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and scholarly bodies globally.

How could any sane believer imagine that the soldiers of Imam al-Mahdi - the very leader destined to seek refuge at the Ka'bah and pray beside the Black Stone - would launch explosive ballistic missiles toward Makkah? By pointing missiles toward the Holy Sanctuary, their trajectory mirrors the dark transgression of Abraha al-Ashram, not the banner of the Mahdi.

5. Dismantling Apocalyptic Defeatism: Victory Before the Mahdi

A central insight emphasized in the lecture is the urgent need to eradicate the defeatist mentality infecting modern Muslims regarding end-times prophecies.

Many Muslims today have adopted a fatalistic mindset: 'Nothing can be done until Imam Mahdi arrives. Dajjal will control the world, so all effort is useless.' This defeatism leads people to grasp desperately at any armed group, hoping they are the prophesied army.

Shaykh Abdullah strongly refutes this: The authentic Hadiths of the Great War (Al-Malhama al-Kubra) prove that sincere believers will achieve monumental victories across the world before Dajjal emerges! And how will they achieve those victories? Without a new Prophet, without a new Book, and without any new revelation. It is with this very Qur'an and this authentic Sunnah that ordinary believers - through knowledge, Tawhid, and steadfast practice - will prevail.

Furthermore, Muslims must overcome media illiteracy. Many in our societies consume news through filtered Western, Delhi, or Tehran outlets without understanding Arabic or theological reality. We must return to primary texts and scholar-verified facts.

Final Conclusion: Imam al-Mahdi has no association with the Houthis. The true Yemen is the gentle, faithful people who accepted Islam peacefully. Al-Aqsa belongs to the heritage of Umar (RA), and the authentic Mahdi will emerge to unite the Ummah upon Tawhid, not upon sectarianism or attacks on sacred sanctuaries.
