[Collection & Reference]: Narration #6623 in Musnad Ahmad.

[Core Subject]: Al-Rum, the Romans, were the Byzantine Empire in the Prophet's time. Many narrations about the end speak of the Muslims' relations with them: a truce, a joint war, then the great battle.

[Described Characteristics]: Amr ibn al-As heard that the Hour will come when the Romans are the most numerous of people, and he listed their good qualities: they are the most forbearing in trial, the quickest to recover after a disaster, the best to the poor, orphans and the weak, and they resist the oppression of kings.

[Timeline & Context]: Their part runs through the whole time before the Dajjal: first the truce, then the war, then the conquest of Constantinople.

[Prophetic Practice]: Amr's words teach fairness: name the good in others even when speaking of conflict.

[Core Subject]: The Prophet ﷺ said the Muslims will make a secure peace with the Romans, and together they will fight a common enemy.

[Described Characteristics]: They win and take spoils, and camp in a green meadow. A man from the Christians raises the cross and says 'The cross has won', a Muslim gets angry and breaks it, and the Romans betray the truce and gather for the great battle. In the hadith of Awf ibn Malik, there will be a truce with the Banu al-Asfar, who then come under eighty banners with twelve thousand men under each.

[Timeline & Context]: This truce opens the time before the Dajjal, and the great battle follows it.

[Prophetic Practice]: Keeping one's word is part of faith. Treaties are kept until the other side breaks them.

[Core Subject]: Constantinople, today's Istanbul, was the capital of the Romans. The Prophet ﷺ foretold that the Muslims would conquer it.

[Described Characteristics]: In Sahih Muslim, after the great battle the Muslims reach the city and conquer it without weapons: at the first 'La ilaha illallah wallahu akbar' one side of its wall falls, at the second the other side, at the third the way opens. While they are dividing the spoils, a cry goes up that the Dajjal has come among their families.

[Timeline & Context]: The conquest comes right after the great battle and just before the Dajjal.

[Prophetic Practice]: The city falls to dhikr, not weapons. La ilaha illallah wallahu akbar is worth more than we think.

[Core Subject]: Wealth increases until it overflows, and a man goes out with his charity and finds no one to accept it.

[Described Characteristics]: The owner of wealth worries about who will accept his zakah. When he offers it, the other says, 'I have no need of it.'

[Timeline & Context]: It has come in waves: it was seen in the time of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, and it will come again in the time of Isa (AS).

[Prophetic Practice]: 'Give charity, for a time will come when a man walks with his charity and finds no one to take it.' Give while it can still be accepted.

[Core Subject]: A sudden, widespread mortality that takes people quickly 'like the murrain of sheep' - the third of the six signs the Prophet ﷺ named to Awf ibn Malik.

[Described Characteristics]: Awf ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said during the expedition of Tabuk: 'Count six signs before the Hour: my death; then the conquest of Jerusalem; then a mass death that will take you like the qu'as (murrain) of sheep; then abundance of wealth...; then a tribulation that enters every Arab house; then a truce with the Romans which they will betray...' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3176).

[Timeline & Context]: Named third in Awf's six, after the conquest of Jerusalem and before the overflowing of wealth; its instances recur rather than occurring once.

[Prophetic Practice]: Keep your heart ready for death, observe the prophetic guidance on plague (neither entering nor fleeing an afflicted land), and care for the sick and the bereaved.

[Geographical Locations]: Mentioned in narration : Constantinople (Istanbul).
