Truce with the Romans
In brief
The Prophet ﷺ said that the Muslims will make a secure peace with the Romans, and that together they will fight a common enemy.
They win that war, take the spoils, and camp in a green meadow. Then a man from the Christians raises the cross and says, 'The cross has won.' A Muslim gets angry and breaks it, the Romans betray the truce, and they gather for the great battle. Another hadith, from Awf ibn Malik, says there will be a truce with the Banu al-Asfar, who then come under eighty banners with twelve thousand men under each.
This truce opens the time before the Dajjal, and the great battle follows it. Awf ibn Malik's hadith lists six things before the Hour: the Prophet's death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague, wealth overflowing, a trial that enters every Arab home, and then this truce. Scholars note that the first five of these have already happened.
Keeping one's word is part of faith. Treaties are kept until the other side breaks them.
Where it sits in the sequence
Mu'adh ibn Jabal's narration gives this order: Jerusalem flourishes, Yathrib is in ruins, the great battle, the conquest of Constantinople, then the Dajjal (Sunan Abi Dawud 4294, graded hasan by al-Albani). Sahih Muslim 2897 places the battle at al-A'maq or Dabiq, then Constantinople, then the Dajjal. Sunan Abi Dawud 4292 puts a truce with the Romans before the battle. The narrations on the Mahdi do not state his place in this order.

Narrated `Auf bin Malik:I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) during the Ghazwa of Tabuk while he was sitting in a leather tent. He said, "Count six signs that indicate the approach of the Hour: my death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague that will afflict you (and kill you in great numbers) as the plague that afflicts sheep, the increase of wealth to such an extent that even if one is given one hundred Dinars, he will not be satisfied; then an affliction which no Arab house will escape, and then a truce between you and Bani Al-Asfar (i.e. the Byzantines) who will betray you and attack you under eighty flags. Under each flag will be twelve thousand soldiers

Dhu Mikhbar said:I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: you will make a secure peace with the Byzantines, then you and they will fight an enemy behind you, and you will be victorious, take booty, and be safe. You will then return and alight in a meadow with mounds and one of the Christians will raise the cross and say: The cross has conquered. One of the Muslims will become angry and smash it, and the Byzantines will act treacherously and prepare for the battle

‘Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja’i said:“I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) during the campaign of Tabuk, when he was in a tent made of leather, so I sat in front of the tent. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Enter, O ‘Awf.’ I said, ‘All of me, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘All of you.’ Then he said: ‘O ‘Awf, remember six things (that will occur) before the Hour comes, one of which is my death.’ I was very shocked and saddened at that. He said: ‘Count that as the first. Then (will come) the conquest of Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem); then a disease which will appear among you and cause you and your offspring to die as martyrs and will purify your deeds; then there will be (much) wealth among you, so that if a man were to be given one hundred Dinar he would still be dissatisfied; and there will be tribulation among you that will not leave any Muslim house untouched;* then there will be a treaty between you and the Romans, then they will betray you and march against you with eighty banners, under each of which will be twelve thousand (troops).’”

It was narrated that Jubair bin Nufair said:“Jubair said to me: ‘Let’s go to Dhu Mikhmar, who was a man from among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ).’ So I went with them and he asked him about the peace treaty (with the Romans). He said: ‘I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: “The Romans will enter into a peace treaty with you, then you and they will fight one another as enemies, and you will be victorious; you will collect the spoils of war and be safe. Then you will come back until you stop in a meadow with many hillocks. A man from among the people of the Cross will raise the Cross and will say: ‘The Cross has prevailed.’ Then a man among the Muslims will become angry and will go and break the Cross. The traditions mentioned above has also been transmitted by Khalid b. Khalid al-Yashkuri through different chain of narrators. This version has:I (Hudhaifah) asked : Will any be spared after the use of the sword ? He replied: There will be remnant with specks in its eye and an illusory truce. He then transmitted the rest of the tradition. Qatadah applied this to the apostasy during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr. The word aqdha' (sing. qadhan) means specks, hudnah means truce and dakhan means malice

'You will make a secure peace with the Romans, and you and they will fight an enemy behind you'; then a man raises the cross, a Muslim breaks it, and the Romans gather for the great battle (Sunan Abi Dawud 4292). The narration describes a specific peace at a specific moment; this panel gives the readings and matches it to no present alliance.

What the commentators said it means
- The truce is the step before the great battle (al-malhamah) and the conquest of Constantinople, all before the Dajjal: Ibn Kathir, al-Nihayah fi al-Fitan.
- The Prophet ﷺ counted six things before the Hour, the last a truce with Banu al-Asfar who then betray it and come under eighty banners (Sahih al-Bukhari 3176).
Read with care
- Present treaties and military alliances are not matched to this narration here; doing so would be date-setting (rule 1).
