Kitab al-Fitan of Nu'aym ibn Hammad: ungraded, and weak overall. Never established on its own.

So he told us about the Umayyads, even mentioning the emergence of Marwan. Then after Marin, who emerges from the Jazira, will come black flags. They will pour down upon you a torrent until they enter Damascus for three hours of the day, and mercy will be withdrawn from its people. Then mercy will return to it, and the sword will be removed from them, then they will march until they reach Morocco.

Synthesized commentary, isnad grading & cross-references

[Collection & Reference]: Narration #559 in Kitab al-Fitan (Nu'aym ibn Hammad).

[Scholarly Verification Notice]: Recorded in Nu'aym ibn Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan (d. 228 AH). Hadith scholars classify this historical compilation as ungraded and weak overall; its isolated reports are not accepted as established doctrine unless corroborated by standard Sahih works.

[Core Subject]: Black banners coming from the east, from Khurasan, appear in several reports as an army that comes before or with the Mahdi.

[Described Characteristics]: The best-known reports say: 'Black banners will come from Khurasan and nothing will turn them back until they are planted in Iliya (Jerusalem)', and 'If you see them, go to them even crawling over snow'. Hadith scholars graded these reports weak.

[Timeline & Context]: No sahih narration fixes their time.

[Prophetic Practice]: A flag's colour proves nothing. Judge any group by the Quran and Sunnah, not by its claims about prophecy.

[Core Subject]: The Prophet ﷺ foretold that the ruin of his ummah would come at the hands of young men of Quraysh, and that rule would turn into kingship after thirty years of caliphate. Scholars connect these with the Umayyad dynasty (41-132 AH).

[Described Characteristics]: Abu Hurayrah said he could name them if he wished. Ibn Hajar and others explain that he meant certain Umayyad rulers, beginning around the year 60 AH, and Abu Hurayrah prayed to die before then.

[Timeline & Context]: This was in the first Islamic century, and it has already passed.

[Prophetic Practice]: Abu Hurayrah sought refuge from 'the year sixty and the rule of boys'. Ask Allah for just leaders.

[Geographical Locations]: Mentioned in narration : Damascus.
