Intercession

In brief

Intercession (shafa'ah) means asking Allah, with His permission, to have mercy on someone else. On the Day of Judgment the Prophet ﷺ will make the Great Intercession for all of humanity, and others will be allowed to intercede after him.

In the distress of the Gathering, people go to Adam, then Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa and Isa, and each one says, 'Not me, go to someone else.' Then they come to Muhammad ﷺ. He falls in prostration beneath the Throne and praises Allah with words taught to him at that moment, until he is told: 'Raise your head. Ask and you will be given; intercede and it will be accepted.' Later he intercedes again for believers who entered the Fire, to bring them out.

Every prophet was given one special prayer and used it in this world. The Prophet ﷺ saved his as intercession for his ummah on that Day. The Quran also teaches that no one intercedes except with Allah's permission, and only for those He is pleased with.

What to do

After the adhan, say the dua of the call: whoever says it, his intercession becomes due on the Day of Resurrection.
