Mahdi

In brief

The Mahdi, meaning 'the rightly guided one', is a man from the Prophet's ﷺ family, a descendant of Fatimah, who will lead the Muslims near the end of time. The world he comes into is full of oppression, and he fills it with justice instead.

The hadith say his name will be like the Prophet's name and his father's name like the Prophet's father's name, so Muhammad ibn Abdullah. He has a broad forehead and a fine, high nose. He rules for seven years, wealth is plentiful in his time, and he hands it out by the handful without counting. When Isa (AS) comes down, the Mahdi is about to lead the prayer.

He comes before the Dajjal, in the time of the great wars with the Romans, around the conquest of Constantinople. The word 'Mahdi' itself is not in Bukhari or Muslim, but Sahih Muslim describes a caliph at the end of time who gives out wealth without counting, and other collections name the Mahdi with chains scholars graded sahih or hasan. Over the centuries many people have claimed to be the Mahdi, or been called him, and every one of them proved false. No living person should be named as the Mahdi.

What to do

Waiting for a rescuer is not the Sunnah. Work for justice where you are, and do not follow anyone who claims the title.

Where it sits in the sequence

Phase 3 / 7Before the Dajjal

Mu'adh ibn Jabal's narration gives this order: Jerusalem flourishes, Yathrib is in ruins, the great battle, the conquest of Constantinople, then the Dajjal (Sunan Abi Dawud 4294, graded hasan by al-Albani). Sahih Muslim 2897 places the battle at al-A'maq or Dabiq, then Constantinople, then the Dajjal. Sunan Abi Dawud 4292 puts a truce with the Romans before the battle. The narrations on the Mahdi do not state his place in this order.
