Madinah guarded from the Dajjal; it expels its impurity
Appeared
In brief
Madinah has a special place at the end of time. The Dajjal cannot enter it, and it drives out its impurity the way a blacksmith's furnace removes the dirt from iron.
Angels guard every way into the city. When the Dajjal camps outside, Madinah shakes three times, and every hypocrite inside goes out to him. The Prophet ﷺ said faith will retreat to Madinah as a snake retreats to its hole. Near the very end, though, Madinah will be left empty, visited only by wild animals and birds. Another hadith says the flourishing of Jerusalem will be the ruin of Yathrib (Madinah), before the great battle; scholars differ on what that ruin means.
'Whoever can die in Madinah, let him do so, for I will intercede for whoever dies there.'

The narrations do not put these in order, and many of them overlap. Sahih al-Bukhari 7121 lists several together.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:A time will come for the people (of Medina) when a man will invite his cousin and any other near relation: Come (and settle) at (a place) where living is cheap, come to where there is plenty, but Medina will be better for them; would they know it! By Him in Whose Hand is my life, none amongst them would go out (of the city) with a dislike for it, but Allah would make his successor in it someone better than be. Behold. Medina is like furnace which eliminates from it the impurities. And the Last Hour will not come until Medina banishes its evils just as a furnace eliminates the impurities of iron

Imam Yahya An-Nawawid. 676 AH (631-676 AH)
Gathers the Prophet's ﷺ words that neither the plague nor the Dajjal will enter Madinah, that angels guard its approaches, and that it will shake three times so that every disbeliever and hypocrite leaves it, expelling its dross as a furnace removes the impurity of iron; al-Nawawi treats the protection of Madinah as an established virtue, with its final shaking still awaited.
Sharh Sahih Muslim, on Hadith 1379-1381
Present-day data
These numbers show the world today beside the narration. They do not decide whether the sign has appeared; that is shown only through named scholars, in the Scholars' views tab.
Madinah is guarded: 'there is no land that the Dajjal will not tread except Makkah and Madinah; on every pass angels stand in rows guarding it' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1881), and it expels its impurity as a bellows expels the dross of iron (Sahih Muslim 1381). A weaker-graded report adds that 'the flourishing of Jerusalem will be the ruin of Yathrib' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4294). Today Madinah is a large, growing city.
Narrations behind this panel: Sahih al-Bukhari 1881 · Sahih Muslim 1381 · Sunan Abi Dawud 4294
What the commentators said it means
- The ruin of Yathrib in Abu Dawud 4294 comes in a sequence with the great battle and the Dajjal, so the commentators place it near those events, not in any present decline: al-'Azimabadi, 'Awn al-Ma'bud.
- At the very end, Madinah will be left to wild animals and birds, and the last two to be gathered are shepherds of Muzaynah heading for it (Sahih al-Bukhari 1874).
Read with care
- The population figure is the city's present state, not a measure of the narrations, which speak of protection and of a final emptying at the end of time.
