Fire from Yemen
In brief
The last of the ten great signs is a fire that comes out of Yemen, from the depths of Aden, and drives people toward the place where they will be gathered.
The fire stays close to people wherever they stop for the night and wherever they rest at midday, and it keeps moving them on. Sahih al-Bukhari describes people travelling in groups, some riding two, three or even ten to a single camel, toward the land of the gathering, which scholars identify as Sham.
This gathering happens in this world, before the Hour. It is not the same as the great Gathering (al-Hashr) on the Day of Judgment. Some narrations say the fire comes from the Hijaz or from the east, and scholars reconcile these in different ways. It is named last among the great signs and taken as the final sign before the Hour.
Each of these signs is a reminder that the time for deeds is now.
Where it sits in the sequence
The sun rising from the west and the Beast come close together, whichever is first (Sahih Muslim 2941). One version of Sahih Muslim 2901 ends its list with a fire that drives people to their gathering. The narrations here do not fix the places of the Smoke or the destruction of the Ka'bah.

Narrated Anas:When `Abdullah bin Salam heard the arrival of the Prophet (ﷺ) at Medina, he came to him and said, "I am going to ask you about three things which nobody knows except a prophet: What is the first portent of the Hour? What will be the first meal taken by the people of Paradise? Why does a child resemble its father, and why does it resemble its maternal uncle" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Gabriel has just now told me of their answers." `Abdullah said, "He (i.e. Gabriel), from amongst all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The first portent of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the east to the west; the first meal of the people of Paradise will be Extra-lobe (caudate lobe) of fish-liver. As for the resemblance of the child to its parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and gets discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets discharge first, the child will resemble her." On that `Abdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." `Abdullah bin Salam further said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The Jews are liars, and if they should come to know about my conversion to Islam before you ask them (about me), they would tell a lie about me." The Jews came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and `Abdullah went inside the house. Allah's Apostle asked (the Jews), "What kind of man is `Abdullah bin Salam amongst you?" They replied, "He is the most learned person amongst us, and the best amongst us, and the son of the best amongst us." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "What do you think if he embraces Islam (will you do as he does)?" The Jews said, "May Allah save him from it." Then `Abdullah bin Salam came out in front of them saying, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah." Thereupon they said, "He is the evilest among us, and the son of the evilest amongst us," and continued talking badly of him

Narrated Anas:`Abdullah bin Salam heard the news of the arrival of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (at Medina) while he was on a farm collecting its fruits. So he came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "I will ask you about three things which nobody knows unless he be a prophet. Firstly, what is the first portent of the Hour? What is the first meal of the people of Paradise? And what makes a baby look like its father or mother?'. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Just now Gabriel has informed me about that." `Abdullah said, "Gabriel?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes." `Abdullah said, "He, among the angels is the enemy of the Jews." On that the Prophet (ﷺ) recited this Holy Verse:-- "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel (let him die in his fury!) for he has brought it (i.e. Qur'an) down to your heart by Allah's permission." (2.97) Then he added, "As for the first portent of the Hour, it will be a fire that will collect the people from the East to West. And as for the first meal of the people of Paradise, it will be the caudate (i.e. extra) lobe of the fish liver. And if a man's discharge preceded that of the woman, then the child resembles the father, and if the woman's discharge preceded that of the man, then the child resembles the mother." On hearing that, `Abdullah said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah. O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ); the Jews are liars, and if they should come to know that I have embraced Islam, they would accuse me of being a liar." In the meantime some Jews came (to the Prophet) and he asked them, "What is `Abdullah's status amongst you?" They replied, "He is the best amongst us, and he is our chief and the son of our chief." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What would you think if `Abdullah bin Salam embraced Islam?" They replied, "May Allah protect him from this!" Then `Abdullah came out and said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The Jews then said, "Abdullah is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us," and disparaged him. On that `Abdullah said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! This is what I was afraid of

We are discussing about the Last Hour. Thereupon he said: It will not come until you see ten signs before and (in this connection) he made a mention of the smoke, Dajjal, the beast, the rising of the sun from the west, the descent of Jesus son of Mary (Allah be pleased with him), the Gog and Magog, and land-slides in three places, one in the east, one in the west and one in Arabia at the end of which fire would burn forth from the Yemen, and would drive people to the place of their assembly

Shu'ba said that 'Abd al-'Aziz b. Rufai' reported on the authority of Abu Tufail who reported on the authority of Abu Sariha a hadith like this that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) did not make a mention of (the tenth sign) but he said that out of the ten one was the descent of Jesus, son of Mary (peace be upon him), and in another version it is the blowing of the violent gale which would drive the people to the ocean

The Refiner's Fire, the Day Burning like an Oven, and the Return of Elijah the Prophet
The final book of the Old Testament foretells the coming of the Lord's messenger to prepare the way, followed suddenly by the Lord Himself coming to His temple. But who can endure the day of His coming? He is like a refiner's fire and fuller's soap. Chapter 4 describes the Great Day: 'burning like an oven, when all the proud and evildoers will be stubble.' Before that terrible Day arrives, God promises to send Elijah the prophet to turn the hearts of the parents to children and children to parents, lest the earth be struck with a curse.
For behold, the day comes, it burns like a furnace; and all the proud, and all who work wickedness, will be stubble; and the day that comes will burn them up, says the Lord of hosts...
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.

Meaning and context
The last of the ten great signs is 'a fire that comes out of Yemen, from the depths of Aden, driving the people to their place of gathering' (Sahih Muslim 2901), where it stays with them by day and night (Sahih al-Bukhari 6522). It lies ahead; this panel gives the readings.
Narrations behind this panel: Sahih Muslim 2901a · Sahih al-Bukhari 6522 · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2217
What the commentators said it means
- The gathering is to Sham, in this world, before the Trumpet: Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, on Sahih al-Bukhari 6522.
- It is the last of the great signs before the Hour itself: al-Nawawi, Sharh Sahih Muslim.
Read with care
- Yemen's present war and the fires and oil incidents around Aden are not linked to this sign here; doing so would be date-setting and a judgement on a suffering people (rules 1 and 4).
