The Abomination of Desolation in the Sanctuary, Great Tribulation, and Resurrection

Summary

Gabriel reveals the timeline of seventy weeks decreed for Jerusalem and the Holy Sanctuary. A ruthless prince breaks covenant, halts the daily sacrifices, and sets up the 'abomination that makes desolate' upon the wing of the temple. Chapter 12 foretells an unprecedented time of anguish, Archangel Michael arising, deliverance of those written in the book, and the bodily resurrection of the dead to everlasting life or everlasting contempt.

Original text and meaning

9:27Hebrew

He will confirm a covenant with many for one week; and in the middle of the week he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. On the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, until the full decreed end is poured out.

12:1-2Hebrew

At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there will be a time of trouble, such as never was... Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Close parallels in Islam

This prophecy forms the scriptural backbone of debates surrounding the desecration and rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. In Islamic hadiths, Bayt al-Maqdis is besieged by the Dajjal until Prophet 'Isa pursues him to the Gate of Ludd. Daniel 12:2 contains one of the Hebrew Bible's clearest statements on the bodily resurrection (Al-Ba'th wa an-Nushur).

Background

Historically foreshadowed by Antiochus IV Epiphanes (167 BC) and the Roman destruction of 70 AD. Jesus cited this prophecy in Matthew 24:15 as an unfulfilled future sign preceding the end of the age. Modern groups preparing for a 'Third Temple' cite this text as requiring a functional sanctuary before the end times.

Ezekiel 40:1-4; 43:1-7; 47:1-12Ezekiel

The Vision of the Restored Third / Millennial Temple and the River of Life

Summary

Ezekiel is taken in heavenly vision to a very high mountain in the land of Israel where a celestial architect measures every dimension of a magnificent new Temple compound. In chapter 43, the Glory of the God of Israel returns through the East Gate like the sound of many waters, entering the sanctuary to dwell forever. In chapter 47, living healing waters flow out from under the threshold of the Temple, swelling into a deep river that transforms the Dead Sea into fresh water, with healing fruit trees lining its banks.

Original text and meaning

43:2Hebrew

Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with his glory.

47:1Hebrew

He brought me back to the door of the house; and behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward; for the forefront of the house faced toward the east. The waters came down from under, from the right side of the house, on the south of the altar.

Close parallels in Islam

This extensive vision (chapters 40-48) is the primary scriptural architecture utilized by contemporary Jewish groups (such as the Temple Institute) seeking to rebuild the Third Temple on the Temple Mount (*Haram al-Sharif*). While Islamic orthodoxy regards the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock as the divinely blessed sanctuary (*Al-Masjid al-Aqsa*, Surah Al-Isra 17:1), the imagery of living waters flowing from Bayt al-Maqdis resonates with hadiths describing the blessings of Sham and Jerusalem during the era of Prophet 'Isa.

Background

Because Solomon's Temple was destroyed in 586 BC and the Second Temple built by Zerubbabel/Herod differed substantially from these architectural measurements, Orthodox Judaism believes Ezekiel's Temple is the literal Third Temple to be constructed in the Messianic era. Christian views vary between a literal millennial sanctuary and an allegory of Christ/the Church.

Psalm 2:1-12; 110:1-7; 132:13-14Psalms

The Messianic King on Mount Zion and the Eternal Promises of Jerusalem

Summary

The Royal Psalms declare God's decree installing His Anointed King (Mashiach) upon Mount Zion, His holy hill, dashing rebel kings like clay pots. Psalm 110 foretells the Lord commanding the Messiah to rule from Zion in the midst of his enemies until they become his footstool. Psalm 132 affirms: 'For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His habitation: This is My resting place forever; here will I dwell.'

Original text and meaning

2:6Hebrew

Yet I have set my King on my holy hill of Zion.

110:1-2Hebrew

The Lord says to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.' The Lord will send out the rod of your strength out of Zion. Rule in the middle of your enemies.

Close parallels in Islam

While Islamic theology reveres the Zabur given to Prophet Dawud (David), it rejects nationalistic territorial claims, affirming that genuine divine inheritance of the earth belongs only to the righteous believers (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:105: 'My righteous servants shall inherit the earth'). These Psalms represent the primary theological grounding for Jewish messianic sovereignty over Jerusalem.

Background

Psalm 2 and 110 are the most frequently cited Old Testament texts in the New Testament to establish the messianic status and authority of Jesus.

Daniel 2:31-45Daniel

Nebuchadnezzar's Dream of the Four-Metal Statue and the Stone Cut Without Hands

Summary

King Nebuchadnezzar dreams of an immense, dazzling statue with a head of gold, chest of silver, thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet of iron mixed with clay. A stone is cut out without human hands, strikes the feet of the statue, shattering the whole structure like chaff blown away by the summer wind. The stone then becomes a great mountain that fills the entire earth, symbolizing an everlasting divine kingdom that will crush and consume all worldly empires.

Original text and meaning

2:34-35Aramaic

You watched until a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold were broken in pieces together... and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

2:44Aramaic

In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left to another people; but it will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.

Close parallels in Islam

The succession of empires (Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome) terminating in the eternal divine reign parallels the prophetic hadith of the phases of governance: Prophethood, Caliphate upon the prophetic model, biting kingship, tyrannical kingship, and finally the return of Caliphate upon the prophetic methodology (Musnad Ahmad 18430). The 'stone cut without hands' crushing idolatry parallels the mission of Isa (AS) and the Mahdi establishing universal justice.

Background

Written in Biblical Aramaic (Dan 2:4b, 7:28). Foundational to Western and Near Eastern apocalyptic political theology.

Daniel 8:9-26Daniel

The Ram, the Goat, and the Fierce King Trampling the Sanctuary for 2,300 Days

Summary

Daniel witnesses a two-horned ram (Media and Persia) overthrown by a swift one-horned male goat (Greece under Alexander). From one of the four horns that replace it grows a horn of fierce countenance that expands toward the south, the east, and the Beautiful Land (Jerusalem). It magnifies itself even against the Prince of the host, removes the daily regular burnt offering, tramples the sanctuary for 2,300 evenings and mornings, and casts truth to the ground, until it is broken without human hands.

Original text and meaning

8:11-12Hebrew

Yes, it magnified itself, even to the prince of the army; and it took away from him the continual burnt offering, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. An army was given over to it together with the continual burnt offering through disobedience; and it cast down truth to the ground, and it did its pleasure and prospered.

8:25Hebrew

Through his policy he will also cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he will magnify himself in his heart, and in their security he will destroy many. He will also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he will be broken without hand.

Close parallels in Islam

The archetype of the fierce, deceptive ruler who halts worship and casts down truth directly foreshadows Al-Masih ad-Dajjal, who will besiege Jerusalem and claim divinity, only to be slain at the Gate of Lud without conventional military weapons.

Background

Hebrew original resumes at Daniel 8:1. Historically applied in Jewish context to Antiochus IV Epiphanes desecrating the Second Temple in 167 BCE, and eschatologically applied to the final Antichrist.

Isaiah 24:1-23Isaiah

The Isaiah Apocalypse: Cosmic Devastation, the Earth Staggering like a Drunkard

Summary

Isaiah foretells the complete physical emptying and dissolution of the earth because humanity has transgressed the laws and broken the everlasting covenant. The earth languishes, joy is silenced, and the inhabitants are burned until few remain. In that day, the Lord will punish the host of heaven on high and the kings of the earth below; they will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit, and the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed when the Lord of hosts reigns on Mount Zion.

Original text and meaning

24:19-20Hebrew

The earth is utterly broken. The earth is torn apart. The earth is shaken violently. The earth will stagger like a drunken man, and will sway like a hammock. Its disobedience will be heavy on it, and it will fall, and will not rise again.

24:23Hebrew

Then the moon will be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and glory will be before his elders.

Close parallels in Islam

Parallels the Quranic depictions of the cosmic end: the earth quaking violently (Surah Az-Zalzalah 99:1), the crushing of mountains, the sun being shrouded and the moon darkened (Surah At-Takwir 81:1, Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:8-9), and the judgment of tyrannical rulers.

Background

Chapters 24-27 of Isaiah are known to biblical scholars as the 'Isaiah Apocalypse', representing early Hebrew proto-apocalyptic poetry.
