Zechariah 12:1-14; 14:1-21Zechariah

The Siege of Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives Splitting, and Universal Kingship

Summary

Zechariah prophesies that Jerusalem will become an immovable rock and a cup of trembling to all the surrounding nations. In chapter 14, all nations are gathered against Jerusalem to battle; half the city is captured. Then the Lord intervenes: His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem, and the mount will split in two from east to west, forming a very great valley. A unique day arrives, neither day nor night, living waters flow out from Jerusalem, and the Lord becomes King over all the earth.

Original text and meaning

12:3Hebrew

It will happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.

14:4Hebrew

His feet will stand in that day on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in two, from east to west, making a very great valley.

14:9Hebrew

The Lord will be King over all the earth. In that day the Lord will be one, and his name one.

Close parallels in Islam

The global siege of Jerusalem parallels the Islamic Malhamah al-Kubra and the encirclement of the faithful by the Dajjal's forces prior to the descent of 'Isa ibn Maryam. The Mount of Olives (*Jabal az-Zaytun*) is the revered elevated vantage overlooking Bayt al-Maqdis where 'Isa retreats with the believers during the siege of Yajuj and Majuj.

Background

Christian eschatology interprets Zechariah 14:4 as the physical touchdown of Jesus Christ at his Second Coming (Acts 1:11). Jewish tradition connects the cleaving of the Mount of Olives to the opening of the resurrection at the Kidron Valley.

Isaiah 2:1-4; 11:1-9; 26:19Isaiah

The Exalted Mountain of Zion, Messianic Peace among Predators, and Bodily Resurrection

Summary

Isaiah envisions the Mountain of the Lord's house established as the highest of mountains in the latter days, with nations beating swords into plowshares and renouncing war. Chapter 11 foretells a Davidic Messianic ruler under whose righteous reign the wolf dwells with the lamb and the leopard with the goat. Chapter 26:19 provides an explicit affirmation of bodily resurrection: 'Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust!'

Original text and meaning

2:4Hebrew

He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples; and they will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war any more.

11:6Hebrew

The wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat; the calf, the young lion, and the fattened calf together; and a little child will lead them.

26:19Hebrew

Your dead will live. Their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth will cast forth the dead.

Close parallels in Islam

The prophecy of predators living peacefully alongside gentle animals directly matches the authentic hadiths describing the reign of Prophet 'Isa (AS) following the death of Dajjal: 'Lions will graze with camels, tigers with cows, and wolves with sheep, and children will play with snakes without being harmed' (Musnad Ahmad 9270, Sahih).

Background

Foundational Hebrew Bible prophecies concerning the Messianic Age (*Yemot HaMashiach*) and the vindication of God's covenant with Zion.

Malachi 3:1-3; 4:1-6 [MT 3:19-24]Malachi

The Refiner's Fire, the Day Burning like an Oven, and the Return of Elijah the Prophet

Summary

The final book of the Old Testament foretells the coming of the Lord's messenger to prepare the way, followed suddenly by the Lord Himself coming to His temple. But who can endure the day of His coming? He is like a refiner's fire and fuller's soap. Chapter 4 describes the Great Day: 'burning like an oven, when all the proud and evildoers will be stubble.' Before that terrible Day arrives, God promises to send Elijah the prophet to turn the hearts of the parents to children and children to parents, lest the earth be struck with a curse.

Original text and meaning

For behold, the day comes, it burns like a furnace; and all the proud, and all who work wickedness, will be stubble; and the day that comes will burn them up, says the Lord of hosts...

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.

Close parallels in Islam

The return of a great ancient prophet (Elijah) just prior to the Day of the Lord directly parallels the Islamic creed of the descent of Prophet Isa (AS) before the Hour to reconcile humanity to truth and break the cross. The Day burning like an oven mirrors the severe horrors of the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah).

Background

Final chapter of the Christian Old Testament canon (MT Malachi 3:19-24). The expectation of Elijah's return remains central in Passover seders and Jewish messianic anticipation.
