Wonders in Heaven and Earth: Blood, Fire, Smoke, and Judgment in the Valley of Jehoshaphat

Summary

The prophet Joel foretells the pouring out of God's Spirit and cosmic portents preceding the great and terrible Day of the Lord: blood, fire, and columns of smoke, with the sun turning dark and the moon into blood. In chapter 3, all nations are summoned to the Valley of Jehoshaphat (directly outside Jerusalem's Temple Mount) where God sits to judge the earth.

Original text and meaning

2:30-31Hebrew

I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.

3:12Hebrew

Let the nations arouse themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.

Close parallels in Islam

The 'column of smoke' directly matches the major sign of Ad-Dukhan (Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:10-11). The Valley of Jehoshaphat corresponds to the Kidron Valley (*Wadi Jahannam*) between Al-Aqsa and the Mount of Olives, universally tied to the Final Gathering in eschatological tradition.

Background

Quoted by the Apostle Peter at Pentecost in Acts 2 as beginning the apocalyptic fulfillment.

Darkening the Sun at Noon, Famine of the Word of God, and the Great Day of Wrath (Dies Irae)

Summary

The prophet Amos proclaims: 'In that day, I will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in broad daylight.' A famine will follow, not of bread or thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord; people will wander from sea to sea seeking the word and will not find it. Zephaniah sounds the trumpet of the Great Day: a day of wrath, distress, ruin, gloom, and darkness, when silver and gold will not be able to deliver them on the day of the Lord's burning anger.

Original text and meaning

Amos 8:9,11Hebrew

'It will happen in that day,' says the Lord, 'that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day... Behold, the days come, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.'

Zeph 1:14-15Hebrew

The great day of the Lord is near, near and hurrying greatly... That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness.

Close parallels in Islam

The darkening of the sun at noon mirrors the signs of the sun rising from the west and the smoke. The famine of the words of God directly parallels the authentic hadith of knowledge being lifted (raf' al-'ilm) through the death of scholars and the lifting of the Qur'an from mushafs and hearts in a single night (Sunan Ibn Majah 4049). The inadequacy of silver and gold mirrors the hadith of earth vomiting its treasures untouched.

Background

Zephaniah 1:15 is the Latin liturgical source for the medieval hymn of the Last Judgment, 'Dies Irae, dies illa' (Day of wrath, that day).
