إذا كثرت جهالكم، وقلت علماؤكم وفقهاؤكم، وكثرت قراؤكم وأمراؤكم، وقلت أمناؤكم، والتمست الدنيا بعمل الآخرة

If your ignorant people are many, and your scholars and jurists are few, and your reciters and princes are many, and your trustworthy ones are few, and you seek this world with the work of the Hereafter.

ما بينكم وبين أن يرسل عليكم الشر فراسخ، إلا موت عمر رضي الله عنه

There is nothing between you and evil being sent upon you beyond measure, except the death of Omar, (may Allah be pleased with him)

ما بينكم وبين الشر إلا رجل، ولو قد مات صب عليكم الشر فراسخ

There is nothing between you and evil except a man, and if he dies, evil will be poured upon you for miles

إي والذي نفسي بيده إلى يوم القيامة

By the One in whose hand is my soul until the Day of Resurrection

يا عامر، لا يغرنك ما ترى، فإن هؤلاء يوشكوا أن ينفرجوا عن دينهم كما تنفرج المرأة عن قبلها

O Amer, do not be deceived by what you see, for these people are about to renounce their religion just as a woman renounces her kiss.

أول الناس هلاكا فارس، ثم العرب على إثرهم

The first people to perish were Persians, then the Arabs followed them

كان وجهنا على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم واحدا، فلما توفي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم توجهنا هاهنا وهاهنا

Our direction during the time of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, was one. When the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, died, we headed here and there.

ما حدثني كعب بشيء أصيبه في سلطاني إلا وقد رأيت

Ka'b never told me anything that happened to him in my authority except that I saw it

يا مجاهد، إذا رأيت بيوت مكة قد ظهرت على أخاشبها، وجرى الماء في طرقها، فخذ حذرك

O Mujahid, if you see the houses of Mecca with their roofs exposed and water running down their roads, be careful.

فتنة الرجل في أهله، وماله، وولده، وجاره، تكفرها الصلاة، والصدقة، والأمر بالمعروف، والنهي عن المنكر فقال: ليس عن هذا أسألك، ولكن عن التي تموج كموج البحر، فقلت: لا تخف يا أمير المؤمنين، فإن بينك وبينها بابا مغلقا، قال: فيكسر الباب أو يفتح؟ قال: قلت: بل يكسر، فقال عمر: إذا لا يغلق أبدا، قلت: أجل، قال: قلنا: فهل يعلم عمر من الباب؟ قال: نعم، كما يعلم أن دون غد ليلة، وذلك أني حدثته حديثا ليس بالأغاليط ، قال شقيق: فهبنا أن نسأله: من الباب؟ فأمرنا مسروقا فسأله، فقال: الباب عمر

The temptation of a man regarding his family, his wealth, his children, and his neighbour, is expiated by prayer, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil. He said: I am not asking you about this, but about the one that waves like the waves of the sea. I said: Do not be afraid, O Commander of the Faithful, for there is a closed door between you and it. He said: Will the door be broken or opened? He said: I said: Rather, it will be broken. Omar said: Then it will never close. I said: Yes. He said: We said: Does Omar know from the door? He said: Yes, just as he knows that there is a night before tomorrow, and that is because I told him a hadith that is not full of errors. Shaqiq said: So we decided to ask him: From the door? So we ordered Masruq and asked him, and he said: The door is Omar

ليأتين على الناس زمان يعير المؤمن بإيمانه كما يعير اليوم الفاجر بفجوره، حتى يقال للرجل: إنك مؤمن فقيه

A time will come upon the people when a believer will be criticized for his faith just as today the ungodly is criticized for his immorality, until it will be said to a man: You are a believer and a jurist.

أما وابن الخطاب حي فلا، إنما ذاك إذا كان الناس بذي بلي، وذي بلي، وجعل الرجل يتذكر الأرض ليس بها مثل الذي يفر إليها منه، فلا يجده، فعند ذلك تظهر الفتن

دون ذلك بابا مغلقا يوشك أن يكسر أو يفتح ، فقال عمر: أكسرا لا أبا لك؟ قلت: كسرا ، قال: فلعله إن كسر أن يعاد فيغلق، قال: قلت: كسرا، وإن ذلك الباب رجل يوشك أن يقتل أو يموت ، حديث ليس بالأغاليط

Other than that, there is a closed door that is about to be broken or opened. Omar said: Do you have no father? I said: Kasra. He said: Perhaps if it was broken it would be repeated and closed. He said: I said: Kasra, and that door is a man who is about to be killed or die. This hadith is not full of errors.

إن بين يدي الساعة فتنا كأنها قطع الليل المظلم، يصبح الرجل فيها مؤمنا ويمسي كافرا، ويمسي مؤمنا ويصبح كافرا، يبيع قوم فيها خلاقهم بعرض من الدنيا يسير، أو بعرض من الدنيا قال الحسن: فوالله الذي لا إله إلا هو، لقد رأيتهم صورا ولا عقول، وأجساما ولا أحلام، فراش نار، وذبان طمع، يغدون بدرهمين، ويروحون بدرهمين، يبيع أحدهم دينه بثمن عنز

In the hands of the Hour there is a tribulation as if it were pieces of a dark night. A man becomes a believer in the morning and comes in the evening as a disbeliever, and a believer in the evening and becomes an unbeliever in the evening. A people sells their creation for a small offer of this world, or a small offer of this world. Al-Hasan said: By Allah, there is no god but Him. I have seen them as images and minds, and bodies and dreams, a bed of fire, and greedy flies. They begin for two dirhams and go for two dirhams. One of them sells his religion for the price of a goat.

فتنة الرجل في أهله، وماله، وجاره، يكفر ذلك الصوم، والصلاة، والصدقة ، فقال عمر: ليس هذا أريد، ولكن قوله في الفتنة التي تموج كموج البحر يتبع بعضها بعضا، قال: قلت: فلا تخفها يا أمير المؤمنين، فإن بينك وبينها بابا مغلقا، فقال: كيف بالباب، أيفتح أو يكسر؟ قال: بل يكسر، ثم لا يغلق إلى يوم القيامة

A man's temptation in his family, his money, and his neighbour, is expiated by fasting, prayer, and charity. Omar said: This is not what I want, but what he said about the temptation that ripples like the waves of the sea following one another. He said: I said: Do not fear it, O Commander of the Faithful, for there is a closed door between you and it. So he said: How about the door? Will it be opened or broken? He said: Rather, it will be broken, then it will not be closed until the Day of Resurrection

إن بين يدي الساعة لهرجا قلت: وما الهرج؟ قال: القتل قلنا: أكثر ممن يقتل اليوم؟ قال: والمسلمون في فروجهم يومئذ؟ قال: ليس بقتلكم الكفار ولكن يقتل بعضكم بعضا، حتى يقتل الرجل أخاه، وابن عمه، وجاره قال: فأبلس القوم حتى ما يبدي رجل منا عن واضحة

There is a commotion before the Hour. I said: What is the commotion? He said: Murder. We said: More than those killed today? He said: And the Muslims in their private parts that day? He said: Not by killing infidels, but by killing each other, until a man kills his brother, his cousin, and his neighbor. He said: So the people became foolish, so much so that not a single man among us spoke clearly.

كيف بكم إذا لبستكم فتنة يهرم فيها الكبير، ويربو فيها الصغير، ويتخذها الناس دينا، فإذا غيرت قالوا: هذا منكر؟ قيل: ومتى ذاك؟، قال: إذا كثرت أمراؤكم، وقلت أمناؤكم، وكثرت خطباؤكم، وقلت فقهاؤكم، وتفقه لغير الدين، والتمست الدنيا بعمل الآخرة

How will you be if you are afflicted with tribulation in which the old grow old, the young grow up in it, and people take it as a religion, and when it changes they say: This is reprehensible? It was said: And when is that? He said: If your princes are many, your secretaries are few, your preachers are many, your jurists are few, and you learn knowledge other than religion, and you seek this world with the work of the afterlife.

يا أهل مصر، ما تنقمون مني، فوالله لقد زدت في عددكم، وكثرت في مددكم، وقويتكم على عدوكم، اعلموا أني خير ممن يأتي بعدي، والآخر فالآخر شر

O people of Egypt, do not take revenge on me. By Allah, I have increased your number, increased your support, and strengthened you over your enemy. Know that I am better than those who come after me, and the last one is evil.

لا تقوم الساعة حتى تقتلوا إمامكم، وتجتلدوا بأسيافكم، ويرث دنياكم شراركم

It was narrated from Hudhaifah bin Yaman that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:“The Hour will not begin until you kill your ruler and fight one another with swords, and your world is inherited by the worst of you.”
