The author and the book

Abu al-Fida' Isma'il ibn 'Umar ibn Kathir al-Dimashqi was a leading Shafi'i historian, exegete and traditionist of the Mamluk era. Raised in Damascus, he studied under al-Mizzi (whose daughter he married) and Ibn Taymiyyah, and became one of the most relied-upon scholars of hadith and history of his age. His best-known works are the Quran commentary Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim and the universal history al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya; the present book is the eschatological conclusion of that history, gathering the reports on the tribulations, the great battles and the signs of the Hour.
