The River Bariq at the Gate of Paradise
Mention of the First Food Eaten by the Inhabitants of Paradise
I say: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has described the wine of Paradise with beautiful and noble qualities that do not exist in the wines of this world. He mentioned that they are flowing rivers, just as the Exalted said:
"Therein is a flowing spring." [Al-Ghashiyah: 12].
And as Allah the Exalted said:
"Therein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk whose taste does not change, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey." [Muhammad: 15].
This wine consists of flowing rivers, drawn from vast seas there, from springs gushing forth from beneath dunes of musk, and from whatever else Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, wills. It is not trodden by the feet of men in the worst of conditions. He mentioned that it is delicious to those who drink, unlike worldly wine which is characterized by a repulsive taste, harmful effects on the intellect, stomach cramps, and headaches. Allah the Exalted has exonerated the wine of Paradise from all such defects, as the Exalted said:
"There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring, white..." [Al-Saffat: 45].
That is, beautiful in appearance: "...delicious to the drinkers. No bad effect is there in it" meaning stomach ache, "nor from it will they be intoxicated" meaning their intellects will not be lost.
This is because the true intended purpose of wine is merely the exhilarating delight, which is the joyful state through which pleasure is attained for the soul, and this is fully realized in the wine of Paradise. As for the loss of intellect, such that the drinker remains like an animal or an inanimate object, this is a deficiency that arises only from the wine of this world. The wine of Paradise does not cause this; rather, it only produces joy and exhilaration, and for this reason He said:
